Description
An American classic, Fairfax hydroxyapophyllite-prehnite specimens are now highly sought-after. Apophyllites from Fairfax are the best from anywhere in the US, and they are among the finest hydroxyapophyllites known from anywhere in the world. The two main pockets were found in 1953 and 1967. Before it was in John’s collection, this specimen was in the Jim and Dawn Minette collection.
The specimen features one particularly prominent group of lustrous, striated hydroxyapohpyllite crystals, with many smaller crystals, all on a bed of green prehnite. The hydroxyapohyllite crystals are colourless to slightly tinted, depending on the lighting source (for example, under under halogen lighting they seem to have a slight pinkish tone, in other light they have a faint tan hue). In very good condition – there are incomplete crystals at the back of the larger cluster and around the periphery. From the display angle, in excellent overall condition, the main cluster has a couple of rubs and small nicks and a couple other small crystals on the piece are incomplete – this is great for the material. The piece has been trimmed underneath with a saw and sits perfectly for display.
A beautiful and important specimen.
