Description
This is a wonderful specimen – there is so much going on. First, the main event – a gorgeous transparent, lustrous, 3.4 cm fluorite crystal at the peak of the piece. This crystal is a dodecahedron, which is a less common predominant form for fluorite. It has triangular octahedral modifications and square cubic modifications at the corners. These same forms are present on all of the crystals of later-generation transparent fluorite on this specimen.
These transparent fluorite crystals are all perched on top of an earlier generation of fluorite crystals which are cubes with dodecahedral “bevels”, and this earlier generation has a microcrystalline overgrowth over them, so they really contrast with the transparent crystals. In association, there are white bladed calcite crystals, galena crystals, chalcopyrite crystals and quartz crystals.
In excellent condition (incomplete fluorites at the periphery where this was attached to the rock, and an incomplete calcite).
The main central crystal, with the visible background of underlying first generation crystals, is fantastic.
