Detailed Description

This is a beautiful specimen – sharp, lustrous hematite crystals with a dusting of reddish microcrystals of quartz. The hematite crystals are edge-on iron roses. In excellent condition, no damage (an incomplete crystal at the left outer periphery, and a few at the lower periphery, all where this was attached to the surrounding rock). A very pretty combination with the quartz, it almost looks like there has been a reddish snowfall on the hematite crystals. (Trust a Canadian to see snow in a mineral specimen…)

About These Hematites

These fine hematite specimens were excavated from a deposit in the hills extremely close to the town of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. The deposit was worked in the 1970s and 1980s, and these specimens date back to those workings.
