Quartz, var. Amethyst

Specimen # 201014
Mineral: Quartz, var. Amethyst
Location: Jacksons Crossroads, Wilkes Co., Georgia, USA
Size: 7.0 x 6.4 x 4.6 cm

Description

A brilliant amethyst from Jacksons Crossroads, this piece has top lustre and terminations that look like purple glass. On the one side, the specimen exhibits typical crystal form, with a smaller parallel crystal terminations below the two main ones. On the other side, the crystals have a more complex form, hollowed a bit, and with a second generation of clear quartz crystals present. The uneven areas on the surface of these crystals have crystallization patterns on them (visible with magnification). In excellent condition, complete all-around, except for one bottom corner where it was attached. The colour in the photos is balanced to their appearance in daylight (shade).

This is a figured specimen, photographed in Rocks & Minerals (vol. 88, no. 5; p 478, figure 8).

For its lustre and colour, it is an exquisite American amethyst from the John White collection and then the Tracy Kimmel collection – it jumps out from across the room.
