Quartz, var Smoky Quartz (Gwindel)

Specimen # 102722
Mineral: Quartz, var smoky quartz (gwindel)
Location: Col de Talèfre, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Size: 5.8 x 5.0 x 2.0 cm

Description

A beautiful light smoky quartz gwindel from the Mont Blanc Massif. This crystal grew in a tight high Alpine seam, with chlorite (no longer present). It has good definition and lustre and internally is water-clear. Where the chlorite was, the crystal faces retain a faint pattern which sparkles under the lights. The top terminations are mostly complete, and where they are truncated (both top and bottom), they have crystallization patterns, confirming that this is part of the crystal’s story – the crystal’s growth was constrained by the narrow space in which it grew. The underside is mostly a gorgeous, complex myriad of crystal faces. In excellent condition and stands perfectly for display as photographed. An elegant French quartz gwindel from the Tracy Kimmel collection.
