Lorenzenite

Specimen # 200448
Mineral: Lorenzenite
Location: Selsurt Mountain, Lovozersky District, Murmansk Oblast, Russia
Size: 6.0 x 4.9 x 3.0 cm

Description

A sharp doubly-terminated crystal of lorenzenite in matrix with black aegirine crystals. Lorenzenite is a fairly rare mineral, known mostly as acicular crystals up to a few mm in length – the blocky crystals from Selsurt Mountain are the best known. This crystal is great for the species, and a good size (2.5 cm). In excellent condition, minor contacts from the enclosing matrix. From the Pete Richards collection (#3599), with a label. As an interesting side story, Pete’s label says “Flora Mountain”, which is what dealers and collectors were calling the locality for a time. “Flora” was the name of the triangulation station located on the Selsurt Mountain, close to the well-known lorenzenite mines – and the name became attached to these specimens such that many are labeled “Flora Mountain” rather than Selsurt Mountain.  This is a super lorenzenite!
