Quartz, var. Amethyst

Specimen # 103195
Mineral: Quartz, var. Amethyst
Location: Butte Mining District, Silver Bow Co., Montana, USA
Size: 3.8 x 3.1 x 2.3 cm

Description

This is a wonderful old specimen from the Butte mining district. It is a group of parallel-growth amethyst crystals on a core of smoky quartz. The amethyst crystals have highly lustrous pyramidal faces, and the prism faces have very good lustre, but slightly less than the terminations. The crystals are colour-zoned, and translucent to transparent. In excellent condition – the unevenness across the long terminal face is almost all recrystallized – it’s not damage (I can find a couple tiny nicks on the piece by looking for them). From the Tracy Kimmel Collection, ex. Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences (with labels from it and Collectors’ Edge). A super piece!
