A beautiful ball of red iridescent pyrite crystals from a shale outcrop along the Blue River, downstream from Breckenridge, Colorado. The surface of the ball is comprised of tiny crystal faces. Metallic irridescent blue covellite blades in a vein with chalcopyrite.  These are sharp and lustrous, with a few intact crystals protected in the vein (others are incomplete). From the Pete Richards collection, acquired in 1998. The locality is attributed to Summitville where this covellite crystal habit is known. About Pete Richards (click here)

This is a nugget of the rare mineral, awaruite. Awaruite is essentially native nickel, rich in iron. This is an impressive awaruite, as it’s very large for the species!
