Alabandite

Specimen # 101339
Mineral: Alabandite
Location: Merelani Hills, Lelatima Mountains, Manyara, Tanzania
Size: 3.7 x 2.9 x 2.6 cm

Description

This superb parallel-growth alabandite is a figured specimen, photographed in The Mineralogical Record (Vol 45, Sept-Oct 2014, p. 555, Fig. 3). It is notable for the hoppered cube faces and also for the striations on its octahedral faces – and the dominant octahedral forms are modified at the edges by dodecahedral faces. Most alabandite crystals do not exhibit this level of modification. This is a fully crystallized specimen, with growth interrupted at the back and edges (some small natural pits evidence this). There is a neat etching hollow as well, visible in the photos. In excellent condition – no damage. The last photo shows the underside/rear.

A fantastic, high-quality, large and complex crystal for the species.
