Fluorapatite

Specimen # 201188
Mineral: Fluorapatite
Location: Silver Hill Quarry, Bowmansville, Brecknock Twp., Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, USA
Size: 4.5 x 3.5 x 3.0 cm

Description

This specimen features a singly-terminated 2.4 cm fluorapatite crystal together with an amphibole matrix, from a rare Pennsylvania locality for fluorapatite. The fluorapatite crystal is well-formed, with a glassy termination and nice deeper colour at the termination. Under shortwave ultraviolet light, it is golden yellow, and under medium wave ultraviolet light there is a thin band of light blue at the termination. Although not indicated in the labels, with magnification it looks to me as though it has been repaired to the matrix. The crystal is in good condition overall, some contacting and a chip out of the back at the termination. From the John S. White Pennsylvania Collection.
