Description
Goethite-included ferruginous quartz from the ancient iron mines at Felsenmeer. The intergrown quartz crystals are sharp, with good lustre and many are doubly-terminated. In excellent condition, minor contacts and incomplete crystals.
This specimen is from the John S. White Collection. In the recent article by Carl Francis and David Ziga, “Conoisseur’s Choice: Ferruginous Quartz” (Rocks & Minerals, 98:1 Jan-Feb 2023, 41-52), this famous occurrence was discussed, and this specimen was figured (Fig. 17). In particular, the authors observe that goethite-included ferruginous quartz is much rarer than hematite-included ferruginous quartz. They also note that the locality is referred to in Dana’s System of Mineralogy (Frondel, 1962) as “Sundwig”, which is now a district – and they cite John’s observation that although specimens from this classic occurrence were formerly well-known and well-represented in older museum collections in North America, they are not so familiar to contemporary collectors. (The specimen was acquired by John originally with an incorrect label as to locality.)
A fine classic German ferruginous quartz! (also known as “eisenkiesel”)
