Quartz

Specimen # 201107
Mineral: Quartz
Location: Shangbao Mine, Leiyang Co., Hunan, China
Size: 5.9 x 4.5 x 4.0 cm

Description

Detailed Description

A group of crystals exhibiting “candle-quartz” habit, with tiny crystals oriented on larger underlying ones. This piece features additional growth along the six edges of each underlying quartz – a very cool effect. In good condition overall, with some rubs (hence the great price for one of these). From the John S. White quartz collection, a good example of the candle-quartz phenomenon.

About the Shangbao Mine

The Shangbao Mine, which is nestled in a bamboo forest, was originally a small pyrite ore operation. However, commercial mining operations ended decades ago and for many years has been operated for specimens. Today the Shangbao Mine is widely regarded as one of China’s great mineral localities.
