Quartz Epimorph After Calcite

Specimen # 201219
Mineral: Quartz
Location: Djurkovo Mine, Laki, Rhodope Mountains, Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Size: 7.3 x 6.7 x 6.3 cm

Description

This specimen is comprised of bright, sparkling quartz crystals arranged in the form of underlying scalenohedral calcite crystals. However, the calcite crystals are no longer present, so these are amazing hollow quartz shells – they are great epimorphs! There is a hollow in the back of the largest calcite through which one can see a great little landscape of other quartz crystals growing up into the open space. This suggests to me that these internal quartz crystals grew first, then the calcite formed next and then finally the sparkling quartz crystals grew over the calcites. In excellent condition – a couple of tips of the former calcites are incomplete.

This is a beautiful display-quality epimorph specimen from the John S. White Collection – it is striking!
