Quartz, var. Smoky Quartz, Gwindel

Specimen # 103095
Mineral: Quartz, var. Smoky Quartz, Gwindel
Location: Argentière Glacier, Chamonix, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Size: 10.9 x 6.8 x 3.8 cm

Description

This is a superb glassy French gwindel. It is a good size, with brilliant lustre and areas of beautiful internal clarity. The specimen is completely crystallized, as the bottom and backside are covered in fine recrystallization patterns indicating that this piece separated from its original position in the cavity before crystallization was complete. It is in excellent condition – the terminations across the top of the gwindel are all complete, with a section of “feathered” terminations in the middle (the small crystal at lower left has a chip).

This is one of those specimens that the still photos just don’t fully capture – the video really helps you to see how great this one is.

This piece was collected around 1985. From the Tracy Kimmel Collection, and formerly in the Tiziano Bonisoli collection.

An awesome, classic Mont Blanc smoky gwindel!
