Sphalerite

Specimen # 200649
Mineral: Sphalerite
Location: Standard Slag Quarry, Adams Co., Ohio , USA
Size: 2.9 x 2.6 x 2.0 cm

Description

This is a truly gorgeous sphalerite – sharp, lustrous with wonderful iridescence. From the Pete Richards collection, #2680, he acquired it at the Detroit Show on October 10, 1992. This has fantastic crystal form – in Pete’s words: well-defined “pseudo-tetranonahedral faces, where the four tetrahedral faces are each replaced by a low nine-sided pyramid composed of faces of -113 and -135 or something close thereto.” In excellent condition, a tiny nick visible with magnification.  This is such a striking piece – really superb!
