Fluor-Uvite Tourmaline, Magnesite

Specimen # 103175
Mineral: Fluor-uvite Tourmaline, Magnesite
Location: Brumado, Bahia, Brazil
Size: 4.0 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm

Description

Detailed Description

This is a top-quality specimen of both magnesite and fluor-uvite – the crystals of each species are sharp, lustrous and pristine. The magnesites have great transparency and the classic little triangular modification faces. The fluor-uvite crystals are dark green, and under strong light they too have good translucence – they look more transparent when viewed the prism faces. The crystal sizes of each species are in such nice proportion to one another and are in good proportion relative to the size of the piece overall. This is an older Brumado piece. With great contrast, it’s a beauty!

About Brumado Tourmalines in the Fluor-Uvite – Uvite Series

In this profile, I have labelled these specimens fluor-uvite, with the following explanation. Until the more recent IMA reclassification of the Tourmaline Supergroup, these specimens were known as uvite. It is now impossible to distinguish individual specimens in the fluor-uvite – uvite series without advanced analytical techniques. These techniques have not been applied to these individual specimens. However, The RRUFF Project has confirmed that at least some crystals of this appearance from Brumado are fluor-uvite, and I’m not aware of any analytical work that has confirmed the presence of uvite at Brumado. Uvite is much less common than fluor-uvite. The label which accompanies the specimen says “Fluor-Uvite – Uvite”.

Please Note: the colour representation in the still photographs has been carefully calibrated and adjusted to show an accurate rendition of this specimen in daylight (shade). The colours in the video are not similarly adjusted.
