Uvite Tourmaline (Purple), Topaz

Specimen # 100529
Mineral: Uvite Tourmaline (Purple), Topaz
Location: Brumado (Bom Jesus dos Meiras), Bahia, Brazil
Size: 5.8 x 4.7 x 2.2 cm

Description

This is an incredibly unusual Brumado specimen for a couple of reasons. The uvite is a dark crystal with some of the typical dark greenish colouring around the outer edges, but when viewed from the side (i.e. through the faces of the termination) and with good light, it has tints of lilac colouring in the centre of the crystal. This colour is a bit hard to describe – it is not bright or deep purple, the crystal contains a pale purple hue, clearly visible when examined closely.

The second notable feature of the piece is the very pale peach-coloured 8 mm topaz crystal at the lower left, nestled in among the magnesite crystals. I am not aware of another Brumado specimen with these two minerals in association (I discussed with Frank Melanson and he isn’t either) – if there are others, it is a rare association.

In excellent condition, no damage to the uvite or topaz, minor chipping of magnesites but lost among the sparkles. The uvite has an interrupted growth feature as can be seen in the photos – it is natural and has crystallized/rehealed across its surface.

A beautiful, unique specimen from Brumado.
