Wurtzite, epitactic Sphalerite

Specimen # 200111
Mineral: Wurtzite, epitactic Sphalerite
Location: Wurtzite, epitactic Sphalerite, Merelani Hills, Lelatima Mountains, Manyara, Tanzania
Size: 1.6 x 1.5 x 0.9 cm

Description

Crystals of wurtzite that are larger than microscopic are uncommon. From an unusual find, this amazing little specimen is not only a dark red wurtzite crystal – it has epitactic black sphalerite crystals on it. This wurtzite hosts sphalerite oriented on both the pedion (top face) as well as on pyramidal faces, which was not common for the occurrence. In very good condition, minor chipping along one edge and incomplete at the back. The third photo is taken from above. The red colour shows well under decent light, does not need strong backlighting. A remarkable piece!
